I was worried getting a degree for staying out of trouble for 4 years might feel
a little empty, but with beautiful sunshine on King's and scores of old friends
to catch up with it was anything but. Most of the class of 2003 returned to
collect their MAs in person, some from as far away as Japan, and looking around
as we processed to the Senate House it was fantastic to see them all and to
hear how much everyone had achieved. A few moments later the formalities were
over and it was time to stroll across the front lawn, under strict instructions
that our new titles did not allow us to loiter on it!
King's put on a lovely drinks reception on the grass and at every turn it
seemed impossible not to bump into people I had been meaning to see for months.
A delicious lunch followed, and as Richard's familiar voice boomed out across
the Hall, entreating us to return often and to claim our six free meals a
year, it was hard to feel sorry for the students studying for exams. An
afternoon of relaxing in the sun with old friends, the trip most people (myself
included) probably made to Gardies that night, and a train ride back to London
surrounded by King's people left me wanting to come straight back. It felt like
home.
