On Saturday, 13th
March King’s welcomed back 100 Members from matriculation years 1960 and
earlier to reminisce about their time at King’s, rediscover its beauty and to
commemorate the 569th anniversary of the laying of the College’s foundation
stone. It was the 8th annual Foundation Lunch to be held.
Drinks were served from midday followed by a lovely
three course meal in Hall. We would like
to thank Fellow Commoner, Oliver Dawson (KC 1949), and the Provost, Ross
Harrison (KC 1975) for their toasts at lunch. In addition, Iain Fenlon (1976),
Professor of Historical Musicology and Fellow of King’s, who gave a captivating
talk entitled, ‘Sounding off: King’s and music since the war’.
After lunch guests moved
to the Wine Room where two exhibitions were on show: the first, from the Rowe
Music Library, displayed some interesting pieces from the collection, as
referred to by Professor Fenlon, and the second, some fascinating items from
between 1940 and 1960 from the College Archive. These documents included the Senior Tutors’ book, a
staircase map of the College, annotated dinner menus and, of course,
matriculation photographs. Members were asked to bring items from their own
archive to share with other members and the Archivist, Patricia McGuire, was on
hand to advise on the conservation of
archival materials.
The date of the 2010 Foundation Lunch coincided
with the Foundation Concert and the Director of Music, Stephen Cleobury (KC
1982), very kindly permitted Foundation Lunch guests to sit in on the concert
rehearsal during the course of the afternoon.
The Foundation Lunch came to a close with afternoon tea but many guests,
some inspired by the earlier Foundation Concert rehearsal, completed their day at King’s by attending the
Foundation Concert in Chapel.
We hope
that everyone who attended enjoyed their return to King’s. Below you will find
a selection of pictures that were taken on the day.
