This year has been a very special one for the
University of
Cambridge, as we have celebrated 800 years since our foundation. The 800th
Anniversary has been commemorated in a wide variety of events
throughout the year, and now the time has come to bring the
celebrations to a close.
Exactly twelve months from the start of the Anniversary Year, when more than 10,000 people crowded into central
Cambridge to witness a spectacular
light show on the Senate House and Old Schools, light will once again
tell the University’s story. For three evenings beginning on Saturday
16 January, a light show designed by world-renowned light artist Ross
Ashton will be projected onto Senate House and Old Schools. This year’s
event will be even bigger than that of last year. Spectators will be
able to walk from Senate House Yard, down Senate House Passage and into
the beautiful grounds of King’s College, where another piece of light
art will be projected onto the Gibbs Building, as well as Cambridge’s
most famous landmark, King’s College Chapel.
Whereas last year’s show focused on
Cambridge’s illustrious history, this year’s show will focus on the transformative research taking place at
Cambridge. Stunning images from across the University will showcase the breadth of work happening today.
On Sunday, 17 January, the Cambridge University Fire Troupe will be putting on a unique fire performance to accompany the light
show. Come get up close to fire art installations especially created for this
event, be amazed by stunning pyrotechnics, and watch action and drama unfold
before your eyes. While the light show will focus on the future, the fire show
will be a vibrant celebration of the past, symbolising the origins of Cambridge
University and its growth through the centuries. The performance will take place between 6.30-8.30pm.
