Messiah to be transmitted LIVE to cinemas around the world
First ever live simultaneous screening of an oratorio
Easter at King's, now in its fifth year, has grown into an enormously popular series of Easter concerts and services at King's College, Cambridge.
This year the series sees a major new development: it is going global with the cornerstone of the Festival, the King's Choir's performance of Handel's Messiah, being transmitted live into cinemas across Europe. This will be the first ever, live, simultaneous screening of a choral concert in cinemas in different countries. Watch the trailer below (requires Adobe Flash Player).
Performances take place on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 April. The concert on 5 April will be broadcast around the UK, Europe and the US. Cambridge audiences can see it at the Cambridge Arts Picturehouse. There are also screenings in a dozen London cinemas such as Empire Leicester Square and the Gate Picturehouse, Notting Hill.
EMI Classics, with whom the choir record exclusively, will be recording the concert. They will release the CD of this new Messiah shortly after the concert on 20 April.
Easter at King's includes no less than two public performances of Messiah, probably the most popular choral work there is. The concerts start the Festival off on 4 and 5 April, and are performed by the renowned Academy of Ancient Music conducted by King's Director of Music Stephen Cleobury. EMI will release a recording of the Choir performing Messiah to coincide with the concerts.
The Easter Festival is a week of concerts and services in the Chapel. Director Stephen Cleobury selects music suitable for the Christian season of Holy Week and Easter.
